I love words and I love art and creativity, so I think word clouds are a fabulously fun innovation. You copy a section of text into a program, and it generates word art based on a random selection of words (well, they say random, but I suspect the algorithm finds the most common words and highlights them).
Here’s one I made from the first few paragraphs of my novel Burning Embers.
And here’s one from a section during the narrative that’s romantic and dramatic:
And finally, here’s one from the ending:
What do you think? I really rather like them. It’s especially interesting seeing the themes that the program picks out – it’s as if the program has read the book and understands!
If you’d like to try this yourself, the site I used for these is at http://www.abcya.com/word_clouds.htm. It’s easy to use, and the colours are bright and cheery. Enjoy!
